The Children's Room: Not Just for Preschoolers!

In an attempt to the Children's Room more user-friendly for older kids, I've rearranged a few things.

The puppet theatre was relocated nearer to the train table.

The turtles were relocated to the beanbag's old home.

The beanbags were relocated to the Corner and mini-platform/cushion things were introduced.

The posters are for chapter books, not picture books.

There is a table for homework, drawing, games, etc.

Story Times and Other Kids' Programs

Random announcement: Our Flickr account has been updated! Not only is everything current, but now you can also look all the back to 2007!

Friday, September 3 at 4pm: Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie! You've probably read at least the first book, if not all four. Come see the movie with friends and free popcorn! Not only that, but the publishers/publicity people have sent me Wimpy Kid 5 bookmarks and buttons that I will be giving out as well. (It comes out in November and yes, I will order it!).

Monday, September 20th at 11:ooam--"Getting Ready for Kindergarten" Workshop for Parents. If your child is going to kindergarten in the spring (or next fall and you really want to get a jump on it!), this program is for you. The Parent Information Resource Center provides this workshop to show you simple, fun and cheap ways to help your child prepare. You will receive free materials you can use and refreshments will be provided. Childcare will also be provided but you MUST sign up so that I can plan appropriately. Call 474-2044 or email lmichaud@sealib.org
Story Times start September 7 and run through Oct. 15!
Tuesday, 10:30am. 1-2 year olds, Toddlers Story Time. Wednesday, 3:00pm. 4-6 year olds, Runners Story Time. Thursday, 11:00am. 2-3 year olds, Walkers with Parents Story Time.
Friday, 11:00am. 3-4 year olds, Independent Walkers Story Time.
Each Story Time is different: The Toddlers group will have mostly songs and fingerplays or rhymes, with a very simple book or two. Then the little ones will play while the grown-ups have coffee and tea and a little time to socialize.
The Walkers with Parents Story Time is slightly more advanced, with some songs and fingerplays, but we’ll also introduce picture books and ask a few simple questions. Instead of play time, this group will make a small craft at the end.
Independent Walkers will follow the same format, but they will come in on their own while their parents have a chance to select their own library materials.
The Runners group will have a couple songs or fingerplays, but most of the time will be spent reading and talking about the stories while their parents have a chance to select their own materials. They will also have a craft at the end.
There will be a different theme each week, from favorites to fall, etc. Our space is limited, so please call to sign up—these limits exist not only because of space but also so that each child will have the best Story Time experience possible.
Call 474-2044 and ask for Lisa to sign up.

New! Children's Room Computer

The Children's Room now has its own computer! Only children ages 12 and under will be allowed to use it, so when you pick up your tag at the main desk, a librarian will log on for you. It is connected to the internet and has plenty of table space for your homework beside it. If homework isn't really what you'd like to do, we are in the process of loading a variety of educational games onto it which will be available either on the computer directly or on discs you may ask to borrow. A complete listing of those games will be available soon, along with a listing of helpful sites for homework.

Reading to Aspen!

I am thrilled to have Ursula Mackey and her Reading Therapy dog Aspen come to our library! Tuesday the 18th at 4pm, Aspen will be in the Story Time room for kids to read to.

Therapy Dogs International, Inc. explains it this way: Even kids who have been read to at home might have trouble learning to read or have trouble reading to an audience. That is why we have Aspen: Children can bond with her over a story. Because Aspen is patient and nonjudgmental, reading confidence and skills can increase. Even good readers who are shy will soon feel comfortable with Aspen and, by extension, with other audiences as well.

We are planning to invite Aspen and Ms. Mackey back every week so everyone can have a chance to read to her. Please call or come to the library to sign up for a reading time. 474-2044 and ask for Lisa. Or you can e-mail at ocean@sealib.org.
