I think they're called "video rockers" or "tv rockers", but in this case, they'll probably be "book rockers" :)

There are two more of these being processed right now, so we'll have 10 stories total. Each case has a cartridge with a story and story-related games.

There are two of them out on the table near the hut--come try them out!

They open up like books, but you use the little pencil-thingie to choose your activities on the screen!

The two of them, plus two beanbags, an armchair, and the chairs at the table, ought to be enough for that corner!

Monday, Dec. 12 at 3:30: Lego Builders--The Christmas Edition. Come build something for Santa to deliver, to ride in, to live at.... You'll have 50 minutes to build and 10 minutes to show it off and get your picture taken.

Tuesday, Dec. 13, 1-5: Drop In Christmas Craft--Cinnamon Dough Ornaments. This is the best-smelling craft ever! Mix your dough, cut out shapes and take them home to dry.

Wednesday, Dec. 14, 6pm: Polar Express Story Time! Old Time Radio star Don Bagley returns to read wonderful Christmas stories while you enjoy Starbucks hot chocolate. After the stories, children will receive a bell, a stocking and a book.

Thursday, Dec. 15, 3:30pm: Family Christmas Movie Time. Watch your favorite Christmas specials (a double feature if they're short!) with friends while eating popcorn and drinking hot chocolate.

Story Time Stuff

Well, after the Halloween Party mob, the library is still standing--but I apparently misplaced my brain. Story times start up again next week! Eeek! But before I get into that, there's a special program for little kids.

Friday, Oct. 28 at 11am--No Nightmares Story Time for Little Monsters. Halloween-themed, but not even a little bit scary. And of course, a craft afterwards. Costumes are encouraged, but not required.

Ok, now into the big long drone about regular Story Times. First off: PLEASE SIGN UP. If anyone asks you about story times, tell them to SIGN UP. Just call 474-2044 or email lmichaud@sealib.org I need to know how many crafts to prepare and it's important that each child has a seat at the table.

Story Times will run Nov. 1-25 but NO STORY TIMES ON NOV. 11 or 24--If your group is either of those days, please feel free to join the next closest age group's storytime instead for that week.

Instead of play time, this group will make a small craft at the end. 3s and 4s On Their Own will follow the same format, but while they’re in story time, their parents will have a chance to find their own library books or just relax. The 4-6s On Their Own group will have a couple songs or fingerplays, but most of the time will be spent reading and talking about the stories while their parents have a chance to find their own things or relax. They will also have a craft at the end.

Next Book Group Discussion - Blame

The Seabrook Library's Adult Book Discussion Group meets the first Monday of each month at 6:30pm in the library. November' book selection is Blame by Michelle Huneven.

Summary:

Michelle Huneven, Richard Russo once wrote, is “a writer of extraordinary and thrilling talent.” That talent explodes with her third book, Blame, a spellbinding novel of guilt and love, family and shame, sobriety and the lack of it, and the moral ambiguities that ensnare us all.
The story: Patsy MacLemoore, a history professor in her late twenties with a brand-new Ph.D. from Berkeley and a wild streak, wakes up in jail—yet again—after another epic alcoholic blackout. “Okay, what’d I do?” she asks her lawyer and jailers. “I really don’t remember.” She adds, jokingly: “Did I kill someone?”
In fact, two Jehovah’s Witnesses, a mother and daughter, are dead, run over in Patsy’s driveway. Patsy, who was driving with a revoked license, will spend the rest of her life—in prison, getting sober, finding a new community (and a husband) in AA—trying to atone for this unpardonable act.
Then, decades later, another unimaginable piece of information turns up.
For the reader, it is an electrifying moment, a joyous, fall-off-the-couch-with-surprise moment. For Patsy, it is more complicated. Blame must be reapportioned, her life reassessed. What does it mean that her life has been based on wrong assumptions? What can she cleave to? What must be relinquished?
When Huneven’s first novel, Round Rock, was published, Valerie Miner, in the Los Angeles Times Book Review, celebrated Huneven’s “moral nerve, sharp wit and uncommon generosity.” The same spirit electrifies Blame. The novel crackles with life—and, like life, can leave you breathless.

We're having our fourth annual "It's the Great Pumpkin Party"!

Make a pumpkin craft: we'll make "stained glass" pumpkins you can hang in your window at home.

Make a pumpkin cookie: We'll provide plain pumpkin-shaped cookies--YOU have to turn it into...a jack-o-lantern? Who knows? We'll give you bits and pieces, you make your own treat.

Drink apple cider: Cider Hill is generously giving us apple cider for the third year in a row! What great sports :)

On behalf of the Seabrook Library, I would like to thank those who made our summer reading program a success. Since I am the sole children’s librarian, it is only the generosity of all of these people and companies that has made a reality out of what I planned.

Some made formal donations and provided programs, others simply jumped in to help wherever they could. Many companies made donations: Wal-Mart, Shaw’s and Bob’s Discount Furniture have assisted us financially for several years now. Topsfield Fair provided prizes this year and last year. New donors, Ringling Bros. & Barnum & Bailey, Southwick’s Zoo, Franklin Zoo and Great American Country Store provided prizes as well. That’s Very Fun provided beautiful cakes for our parties. Seabrook Station increased their regular generous donation to sponsor the entertainment for our final party.

The individuals who graciously agreed to my requests for programs were Marie Fe Simmons, Rajae Taib and Yi Ning Frost. Kim Kelly helped with all three and at other times as well. Laura Litcofsky has volunteered continually behind the scenes. So many other people have leaped in on request or simply because they saw a need: Nicolas Batista, Brandie Gaffney, Sally Johnson, Brandon LePere, Ana Manfredonia, Gina McGinness, Sheryl Peabody, Mikki Phillips, Jennifer Price, Debbie Simonelli, Jackie Snow, and I know there were more who I didn't see or who my faulty brain is not bringing up.

The LAST Week for Kids--End of "One World, Many Stories"

Monday at 3:30--Movie Time! Come enjoy a short Russian movie (no, it's not in Russian or subtitled) with free popcorn.

Tuesday at 4:00--Stuffed Animal Sleepover! Bring your second-favorite stuffed animal to the library (please do NOT bring the one animal you can't go to sleep without!). We'll read a story or two, then you'll make a nametag for your stuffed friend and wave goodbye. The animals will sleep in the library (and play and read and...) and you will be able to pick them up on Wednesday at the Final Party along with a book of their adventures.

Wednesday at 3:30--Final Party with Toe Jam Puppet Band! This is it: the end of "One World, Many Stories"! Please bring your reading logs in the day before so that I can have prizes ready for the party. Feel free to bring non-participants--there will be treats and fun for everyone. Toe Jam Puppet Band is a really funny, really active, really crazy set of "Big Kids" who will throw things, shout things, play with puppets, sing, and much more!

Friday at 11:00--If the weather is nice, we'll do a Story Walk over at the Rec Center. Come take a nice slow walk and hear a story too :)

Tuesday 3-5pm: Russian Games. Outdoor Russian fun! Have you ever played Cat and Mice? How about Wizards or Boiare? Come out and play.

Wednesday 6pm: Pajama Story Time. Wear your jammies and bring a stuffedanimal. We'll do a craft first, then listen to stories, sing songs,do rhymes... This is an all ages drop in story time.

Thursday 1-4pm: Matryoshka Doll Workshop with Russian Artist Marina Forbes. Find out how Matryoshka dolls are made and watch a slide show. Listen to Russian music, see some Russian dance, and paint your own doll! There is a materials fee for this program--you must buy the doll from Ms. Forbes ($10 and up). Friday at 11: Jenn's Stories. Punk Farm on Tour! And a craft, of course. This is an all ages drop in story time.

Tuesday at 3pm: Chinese Dumplings and Stories. Yi Ning Frost will explain how to make Chinese dumplings and give you one to taste-test :) She also has fairy tales in Chinese and I have gathered the English versions, so you'll get to hear how they compare. PLEASE CALL AND SIGN UP--we really want to have enough dumplings for everyone!

Wednesday 2-4pm: Around the World Games. Many of our favorite games come from somewhere far away: Parcheesi, Mancala, Legos, Pick-Up Sticks and many more. Come play!
6pm: Pajama Story Time. Wear your jammies and bring a stuffed animal. We'll do a craft first, then listen to stories, sing songs, do rhymes... This is an all ages drop in story time.

Thursday at 3pm: Around the World Race. Make a team to fly paper airplanes, make volcanoes, mini-golf, interpret languages and more! If you can help out with this, I still need at least 5 people! All you have to do is stand there and explain; perhaps give a hand to a small team :)

Who: You're invited! The program is primarily for children from Kindergarten through 5th Grade, but everyone is welcome.

When: The Kickoff Party will be Thursday, June 30, at 3pm. A calendar for later events will be handed out.

What: The NHSPCA will be there with a story and a furry friend for you to meet and pet. Bruce Pierce from the local Food Bank will be there. (Our program benefits them: For every two hours the children read, one item will be donated.) Also, CAKE! Laura Litcofsky of "That's Very Fun" will be bringing us another fantastic cake!

Why: Reading is the single most effective way to make academic progress or prevent academic loss during the summer. Also, we have lots of fun and prizes!

How: Sign up at the Kickoff Party and you will be given a "How It Works" sheet and a calendar of events.

This session teaches family activities that help children develop movement skills, language, memory, and more. All of these skills are presented as play, everyday tasks, and preparation for school. During this session parents will explore fun ways to help children learn and discover ideas for simple, hands-on activities to do together at home. Materials for these activities will be provided including a DVD and CD (as pictured).

This is a Parent Information Resource Center program.

Wednesday--3:30-4:30pm: Lego Builders. Build something presidential! Ok, Secret Service and military stuff counts too :) You'll have 50 minutes to build, then 10 minutes to tell everyone about it and get your picture taken.

Thursday--11-12: Tropical Thursday! For this morning hour, we'll be making leis, decorating sun visors, drinking pineapple juice and snacking on goldfish...crackers :)

Would you be friends with the main character? Yes because he looks alone and acts like a real friend--he keeps secrets.
